This pathway contains the initial reactions of the phenylpropanoid pathway, from L-phenylalanine to 4-coumarate. The phenylpropanoids form a large class of secondary metabolites in plants and comprise the phenylpropanoid esters, flavonoids, anthocyanins etc. Phenylpropanoids are also the precursors of lignin.
