The sesqueterpenoids α-curcumene, (-)-β-curcumene and γ-curcumene are produced by plants as insect repellents and insect feeding deterrents [Antonious03]. α-curcumene is a chief constituent of the essential oils of Curcuma longa and is synthesized as a racemic mixture of (+)-α-curcumene and (-)-α-curcumene.
