Summary:
This protein is a very large dimodular enzyme, that contains 7 domains, responsible for glycine binding, adenylation, and condensation with 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate (DHB), L-threonine binding, adenylation, and condensation with 2,3-dihydroxybenzoylglycine, and finally, a Te domain, responsible of condensation of three DHB-glycine-threonine into a single bacillibactin molecule [May01].

The apo enzyme is activated by binding two molecules of 4'-phosphopantetheine, in a reaction catalyzed by the sfp-encoded 4'-phosphopantetheinyl transferase [May01]. The activated enzyme is referred to as holo-DhbF protein.
