MetaCyc Enzyme: alcohol dehydrogenase

Gene: adh Accession Number: G-11540 (MetaCyc)

Synonyms: alcohol dehydrogenase 1, alcohol dehydrogenase

Species: Pisum sativum

Summary:
A cDNA clone was isolated from anaerobically treated pisum sativum cv greenfest cells. The cDNA encoded a gene that was homologous with maize adh1 and adh2. A fusion product of a short stretch of the promoter with a reporter gene was introduced by electroporation into nicotiana plumbaginifolia. Incubation of the transfected protoplasts under anaerobic conditions resulted in increase of transient expression of the gene [Llewellyn87].

Molecular Weight of Polypeptide: 41.2 kD (from nucleotide sequence), 41.2 kD (experimental) [Llewellyn87 ]

Enzymatic reaction of: alcohol dehydrogenase

ethanol + NAD+ <=> acetaldehyde + NADH + H+

The reaction direction shown, that is, A + B ↔ C + D versus C + D ↔ A + B, is in accordance with the direction in which it was curated.

This reaction is reversible.
