A cDNA clone was isolated from Taxus wallichiana chinensis.The protein was heterologously overexpressed in E.coli and shown to function as a taxadiene synthase. It catalyzes the cyclization of the isoprenoid intermediate geranylgeranyl diphosphate to taxa-4,11-diene [Wang02]. The taxadiene synthase of Taxus wallichiana chinensis showed an overall identity with the Taxus brevifolia taxadiene synthase of 97% also containing an presumptive plastidal transit peptide [Wildung96] .
