MetaCyc Enzyme: triterpene synthase

Summary:
A cDNA clone was isolated from Rhizophora stylosa and shown to encode an oxidosqualene synthase.

The gene, which was named RsM2, was expressed in yeast and shown to catalyze the formation of three products; taraxerol, β-amyrin and lupeol in the ratio of 70:17:13, indicating that this enzyme is a multifunctional triperpene synthase. Phyllogenetic analysis reveals that RsM2 evolved from lupeol synthase [Basyuni07a].
