A cDNA clone was isolated from petals of 'fragrant cloud' Rosa. The cDNA was recombinantly expressed in Escherichia coli and the molecular weight of the protein was calculated to be 51.762 kDa [Shalit03]. The cDNA encoded a protein with high similarity to BAHD family of acetyltransferase. The recombinant protein was partially purified and shown to accept alcohols like geraniol and citronellol with acetyl Coenzyme A producing the respective esters geranyl acetate and citronellyl acetate, hence acting as geraniol acetyltransferase,. The AAT1 gene was expressed only in floral tissues during flower development.
