Glycerol dissimilation in E. coli is usually initiated by an ATP-dependent kinase of the Glp system, which phosphorylates glycerol to glycerol-3-phosphate; see glycerol and glycerophosphodiester degradation. However, upon inactivation of the kinase, it may be replaced by an NAD+-linked dehydrogenase, glycerol dehydrogenase [Tang82]. Glycerol dehydrogenase is cryptic in the wild type, and is only activated by mutation. It exhibits broad substrate specificity and its true physiological role is uncertain [Blattner93, Jin83].
