Summary:
YnaI is a mechanosensitive channel of low conductance in E. coli K-12. In a strain lacking all seven mechanosensitive channels (MscL, MscS, MscK, MscM, YnaI, YbiO and YbdG), expression of ynaI from a multicopy plasmid results in stable channel openings in patch clamp experiments [Edwards12]. YnaI protects cells against hypoosmotic shock when highly overexpressed [Edwards12].

YnaI is predicted to have 5 transmembrane segments. YnaI forms homoheptameric channels [MarinoRamirez04, Edwards12].

YnaI is a member of the small mechanosensitive ion channel MscS family. YnaI has been identified as a segmentally variable gene containing highly variable regions scattered among highly conserved regions [Zheng04a]. Expression of ynaI increases in response to overexpression of the response regulator EvgA [Masuda02].
