LdrA is the toxin of a type I toxin-antitoxin system. Expression of LdrA inhibits ATP synthesis, which may lead to the observed inhibitory effect on DNA replication, transcription and translation [Yamaguchi14].
LdrA is part of one of a set of four Long Direct Repeats (LDRs) in the E. coli genome. ldrA, ldrB and ldrC are clustered together in tandem repeats, with ldrD elsewhere on the genome [Kawano02a].
Deletions of LDR-ABC, LDR-D and LDR-ABCD have no effect under laboratory conditions [Kawano02]. Overexpression of LdrA is toxic; C-terminally tagged LdrA retains its toxic effect, while N-terminally tagged LdrA is no longer toxic [Yamaguchi14].
