Summary:
The small open reading frame IbsC was detected by similarity to the open reading frames encoded on the opposite strand of the sib small RNAs [Fozo08]. It was later found that overexpression of a SibC antisense RNA suppresses cell growth, which can be attributed to the production of the toxic peptide IbsC [Mok09].

Overexpression of IbsC is toxic to the cell by disrupting membrane integrity. Whole-genome gene expression analysis after induction of IsbC expression shows changes in expression of many stress response and membrane proteins [Fozo08].
