Summary:
YejM is an essential protein of unknown function. The function of the N-terminal membrane domain of the protein is absolutely essential, but the function of C-terminal periplasmic domain is not essential at low temperatures.

Membrane topology predictions using experimentally determined C terminus locations indicate that YejM has 5 transmembrane helices and the C-terminus is located in the periplasm [Rapp04, Daley05].

A yejM null mutation is lethal [De08]. Strain LH530, a yejMG570A mutant retaining its N-terminal membrane domain but lacking its C-terminal periplasmic domain, is temperature sensitive, is more sensitive to rifampicin and erythromycin, and is defective for Lipid A synthesis [De08, Nurminen97, Hirvas97]. Overexpression of acpT suppresses the lethality of yejM null mutants, as well as the temperature sensitivity of yejMG570A mutants [De08, Nurminen97, Hirvas97]. This suppression does not require phosphopantetheinyl transferase activity because a mutant lacking this activity was still able to suppress the temperature sensitivity of the yejMG570A mutant [De08].

A yejM mutant was found to be constitutive for the SOS response on a β-galactosidase plate assay, but not in a liquid culture assay as measured by dinD1::lacZ expression [OReilly04]. Western blot analysis showed RecA was elevated in the yejM mutant, confirming the results of the plate assay [OReilly04].
