Summary:
RhtC is a probable threonine efflux transporter. Expression of the rhtC gene conferred resistance to threonine [Zakataeva99]. RhtC is related to the RhtB homoserine efflux transporter and is a member of the Rht family of amino acid efflux proteins [Aleshin99]. It seems likely that RhtC functions as a threonine/proton antiport system.

E. coli rhtC has been heterologously expressed in Corynebacterium glutamicum resulting in maximal L-threonine excretion rates of 11.2 nmol min-1mg-1 as compared to 2.3 nmol nmol min-1 mg-1 obtained without rhtC expression which has been suggested to be of industrial significance [Diesveld08].
