Summary:
NupC is one of two high-affinity nucleoside transporters in E. coli. Studies of chromosomal mutants using membrane vesicles have shown that NupC differs from NupG by mediating transport of nucleosides except for guanosine or deoxyguanosine, whereas NupG transports all nucleosides [Komatsu73, MunchPetersen79]. Heterologous expression of nupC in Xenopus oocytes indicates that transport of nucleosides is dependent on H+ [Loewen] The cloned nupC gene complements nupC chromosomal mutations [Craig94]. NupC is a member of the NUP family of nucleoside transporters [Saier99].

nupC is located in a monocistronic operon and its expression is repressed by the CytR repressor. Imported nucleosides serve as precursors for DNA and RNA, and for histidine and various co-factors.
