Summary:
Sequence analysis reveals fhiA and mbhA are two adjacent, divergent pseudogenes which represent the fused boundaries of a 44 gene cluster encoding a second flagellar system designated Flag-2 in E. coli strain 042. A few non-flagellar genes are also located within this region. The Flag-2 system has been deleted in K-12 leaving the fhiA-mbhA gene cluster promotorless. PCR experiments revealed that 15 out of 73 E. coli strains tested had the entire Flag-2 cluster, though it is believed to be inactive in these strains due to a frameshift mutation in the lfgC gene which encodes and FlgC-like proximal rod protein necessary for production of flagella. The Flag-2 locus has also been identified in a number of other bacteria including C. violaceum, C. rodentium, Y. pseudotuberculosis, Y. pestis, and V. parahaemolyticus [Ren05].
