Summary:
NlpI is a lipoprotein that appears to be involved in cell division [Ohara99]. NlpI interacts with the periplasmic protease Prc and may be activated by protease processing [Tadokoro04]. NlpI is involved in the virulence of the invasive E. coli strain LF82 [Barnich04].

An nlpI mutant shows a heat-sensitive cell filamentation phenotype and is more sensitive to osmotic stress than wild type. A strain overproducing NlpI shows morphological abnormalities indicative of cell division defects [Ohara99]. An nlpI mutant (nlpI::Tn5) is associated with increased production of outer membrane vesicles [McBroom07] - a phenotype that is associated with improved bacterial survival under stress [Manning11].

A crystal structure of NlpI was determined at 1.98 Å resolution [Wilson05a].
