Smp is a membrane protein [Neuwald89]. The signal sequence may also have a regulatory function; the mRNA encoding this region is predicted to have distinct secondary structure [Neuwald89].

An smp mutation affects lipoate metabolism, apparently due to effects on lplA transcription [Morris95]. Mutations in the signal sequence result in increased smp transcription [Neuwald89]. Certain insertion mutations in the adjacent and divergently transcribed gene, serB, also result in increased smp transcription [Neuwald90].

ytjB is one of a network of genes believed to play a role in promoting the stress-induced mutagenesis (SIM) response of E. coli K-12 [Al12].
