Summary:
The osmB gene of Escherichia coli has been shown to be inducible by both osmotic stress [Jung89] and growth phase signals [Jung90]. The amino-terminal amino acid sequence of OsmB is consistent with the signal sequence of exported proteins and the signal sequence cleavage site is highly homologous to that of other well-characterized bacterial lipoproteins [Jung89]. The incorporation of radiolabeled palmitic acid and the inhibition of signal sequence processing in the presence of globomycin and subsequent accumulation confirmed that OsmB is a lipoprotein [Udovicki89]. Transcriptional fusion studies demonstrated the induction of osmB by hyperosmolarity and during the stationary growth phase at the transcriptional level [Jung90]. Sequence comparison studies found a high degree of similarity between the OsmB protein and the C-terminal region of the beta amyloid protein implicated in Alzheimer's disease [Sunnerhagen92].
